The workshop, which was held at the Google Academy in London on 19th March, offered girls aged 13-16 across London and the South East the opportunity to develop their skills in communication, confidence and presentation.

  • Research by KPMG uncovered that three in four (76%) women wish they had learned more about leadership when they were growing up, and that they had more opportunities to learn how to lead when they were growing up (75%)
  • On average UK women earn £82 to every £100 earned by their male counterparts

Delivered by Connor’s team of people development experts, the workshop involved a variety of activities to help girls boost their networking skills, stretch themselves outside of their comfort zone, and learn how to communicate well using voice, tone and physical presence.

Modern Muse was set up by Maxine Benson MBE and Karen Gill MBE, the founders of everywoman, an organisation that has championed the advancement of women in the workforce for 20 years. The charity Modern Muse aims to eradicate the gender pay gap in the workplace by empowering girls to lead in the world’s top industries. Currently, the gender pay gap in the UK stands at 17.9%.

Despite aiming high in their education and careers, girls are still stereotyped into lower paid jobs. By showcasing high achieving female role models – or ‘muses’ – working across a range of sectors from aviation to IT, Modern Muse hopes to encourage girls to pursue a broad selection of careers and equip them with skills so they’re ready to pursue leadership roles.

Sue Foxley, Head of Career Transition at Connor, said:

“We know that one of the key solutions to addressing the gender pay gap is to bring more female talent up to the most senior levels of organisations. This workshop is about giving young women the confidence and skills to be future leaders and we are proud to partner with Modern Muse.
“If you talk to any successful person, they will tell you stories of all the people who have helped them get to where they are today. That’s why we believe it it’s crucial to equip young people with the soft skills needed for effective networking - like rapport building and active listening. Also important is understanding how our mindset impacts our ability, and how we can challenge ourselves to step outside our comfort zones.”

Donna Robertson, Director at Modern Muse, said:

“We’re delighted to be collaborating with Connor to help young women take charge of their futures and discover the careers of their dreams. As experts in the advancement of women in business, their guidance will be invaluable for girls taking their first steps into the modern workplace.”
