We’ve learned that with cyber security, it’s a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if’. The more the threat grows, the more people invest in their cyber defences.
HR should be viewed through the same lens.
HR’s true value doesn’t become apparent until after the risk you were prepared to take, becomes an issue.
Again, it’s a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if.’
With some people it doesn’t matter what you do. They want their day in court.
You can treat people fairly, objectively, considerately, with compassion, with kindness. It doesn’t matter. Somehow, somewhere, the damage has been done.
In that situation, if we’ve been brought in early, our job is to make sure the business has the evidence trail it needs and to make sure they are squeaky clean.
The truth is that there’s normally a reason behind the need for a day in court. That’s why we always put people first. As such, we try to resolve, we try to get to the route of the problem, we try to find fair ways to resolve issues, and we try to unearth what’s driving the behaviour.
It might be a poor manager, it might be a perceived injustice, it might be what they’ve told others and they don’t want to lose face, and sometimes it’s because they can’t be honest at home about what is going on. Sometimes it’s something completely out of everyone’s control.
So what’s the easiest way to resolve it? Prevention.
If you’re at the stage where you are looking for cure, then it’s already too late.
Remember ‘when,’ not ‘if.’
We’ve all got to start somewhere. If you’re an SME in particular, start building your HR firewalls today, start your communications on how to stop HR Phishing equivalents today. Don’t wait for the inevitable to happen.
Like cyber threats it’s not a discretionary investment.
