Connor celebrates official opening of Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice

On December 14th Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service celebrated the official opening of their new state-of-the art children’s hospice just outside Maidenhead with patrons Sir Michael Parkinson CBE and Prime Minister Theresa May leading the proceedings.

Connor have supported this outstanding charity for the last 6 years, with Director Fraser Silvey becoming a trustee a year ago.  He attended the opening event on Friday:

“All of us at Connor are phenomenally proud of our association with Alexander Devine. The launch event was a very special thing to be part of and it was lovely to see the hospice positively buzzing with people and good will.”Fraser Silvey, trustee

The purpose-built children’s hospice will offer families real flexibility and choice of where they receive their care and will complement the charity’s existing community-based services currently supporting over 113 families in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and surrounding areas.

John and Fiona Devine from Windsor set up Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service in memory of their extraordinary little boy who sadly passed away in early 2006 from a rare brain tumour, aged only 8 years old. Their personal experience, and subsequent extensive research, led them to realise that there was a vital need for a local children’s hospice service and hospice. Alexander Devine relies on the generosity and support of local communities to carry out the vital work that they do. All of the services are provided free of charge. The challenge is that they need to raise £2.5M a year to keep this amazing facility running.

Fraser went on to expand: “It actually marks the end of the beginning. The reason I say that, is now the hospice is open, efforts need to be focussed on ensuring that fundraising continues in order to keep this wonderful service going. It is acknowledged that it is significantly harder to fundraise for things like running costs than it is for capital projects. So, we are doing all we can to help keep the invaluable fundraising going to ensure Alexander’s legacy is cemented for decades to come”

The hospice is opening their in-patient and respite care services, eventually extending to overnight stays being available to all families. To achieve this, the hospice must raise vital funds.
