Matthew Bracewell had spent six years working for a professional body and latterly for a social enterprise set up by them. Matthew was made redundant and left in July 2016.

Matthew's story

Being made redundant was difficult but I felt my situation was an opportunity. I'd developed a broad range of skills and I thought I had an opportunity to change the direction of my career – but I also recognised I needed help to do so.

Connor calls you to establish which of its consultants are right for you. I wanted a goals orientated outplacement service, delivered in a relaxed way. Based on my requirements I was matched with Joe Lawless. He is based in Southampton and I live in Tunbridge Wells so we met in central London.

Joe was courteous and straightforward.  His advice was always clear – there was never a time I didn’t understand what he was telling me. It was reassuring to know that Joe was at the end of the phone.

My ouplacement service included a psychometric test called the McQuaig personality test. This gave me the inside track on how l would be perceived in the recruitment process – informing me about my natural temperament and what motivates me.

When I was unsure about anything, Joe made me believe that I could do it. I decided I wanted to work in policy and Joe encouraged me to network.  Mixing with people already working in policy made me realise that I could make the transition to a new sector.

I started to apply for policy jobs through networking, the online Connor career centre and other job sites. I found an opportunity working as a policy and research officer for the London Borough of Hounslow, specialising in skills and employment.

Joe was on hand to offer feedback on my application and helped me prepare for my interview. I was offered the job and I’ve been very happy in my new role.

The Connor outplacement service also includes onboarding, settling in to life in a new role. Joe is helping me adapt to the first 90 days and is on hand to offer continued support and guidance during this time.

My advice to anyone who is considering outplacement is simple – 'just go for it'. Everyone that’s made redundant has uncertainty. Outplacement gave me the direction and encouragement to remain confident. I have now secured a good job in the area I wanted to move into, something that I wouldn't have done without Joe’s guidance.
