Providing career coaching and helping an individual to find a new role closer to home
Sharon Smith, experienced legal professional
Sharon Smith had spent 13 years as an in-house solicitor, specialising in debt recovery at a credit insurance business based in Canary Wharf. After a company restructure, Sharon reached a settlement agreement with them and left.
I needed a break after I left my previous employer. My husband had recently passed away and I didn’t want to go straight into a new role. I spent time with my family, which included a memorable holiday in Florida with my four children.
Outplacement came into my life at the right time, I needed it and it gave structure to my job search. I first met with Connor during my notice period, when I was at my lowest ebb. I felt obliged to follow the outplacement process and wasn’t really committed enough. The Connor service lasts until you find a new role, which means you can take a career break without losing their support.
"With Connor I was treated as an individual and not a candidate."
My consultant Sue Foxley sensed that I didn't want to find my next job immediately. Sue and I picked up later in the year and she started to guide me through the process of finding a new position. I wanted to move away from debt recovery and to work closer to home.
I'm not big on self-promotion, I like people to find out about me for themselves. I'd previously relied on recruitment agencies and I didn't have a LinkedIn profile. Sue encouraged me to set up my profile in a sensitive way, not exposing everything about me and taking time to explain the benefits of creating a network.
Sue had the last laugh too as I found my current job through LinkedIn. The talent & acquisition manager at Konica, a specialist in image and print solutions, came across my profile. They approached me about a job they thought would be ideal for me. I interviewed with them the following week and got offered the job the week after that.
The new job has been fantastic for me. I was promoted after three months to a commercial contracts lawyer position and I won an award for promoting company values.
Sue had a positive influence on helping me to achieve the lifestyle I wanted. At times I considered if I should go back to London but she reminded me of my strategy and helped me to focus on what was important to me. The new job is in Basildon, which has roughly halved the time it takes me to get to work.
With Connor I was treated as an individual and not a candidate. Sue was incredibly committed and she made me feel worthy again. Outplacement worked for me and I'm very happy with my new job.
